How to Choose a Ceylon Sapphire
A sapphire should be chosen as an individual object, not as a specification alone. Colour must be seen in honest light, proportions understood on the hand, and treatment and documentation considered before a setting is designed.
Begin with colour, not a label
Ceylon sapphires can range from pale cornflower and vivid royal blue to teal, yellow, pink and parti-colour. Ask to see the actual stone in daylight and neutral indoor light. The most valuable colour is not automatically the right colour for its future wearer.
Read cut and proportions together
A well-cut stone balances brightness, depth and personality. Dimensions also determine how large it appears and which settings can protect it without hiding its character.
Understand treatment
Heat treatment is common and should be disclosed. Unheated status can affect rarity and price, but beauty, evidence and suitability still matter. Never infer treatment from photographs.
